 
In almost every divorce situation both parents want what is best for their children. Often times co-parents can become embroiled in a cycle of conflict, through the courts or in communication with one another. The usual issues are support, division of assets and parenting time.
Studies show that divorce and post-divorce conflict harms children’s development. An alternative to ugly custody litigation is mediation. A mediator does not decide the issues for you and your co-parent. Mediators are trained in getting people to talk about issues and resolve disputes. Mediation is different from arbitration or trial before a judge, because a mediator does not make a decision for the parties. While the mediator can bring both legal and counseling expertise to the table, he or she is not a decision maker. Instead, the mediator assists the parties to resolve their disagreements, and then writes out a settlement agreement which the parties can choose to file with the court.
All communications occurring in mediation are confidential, and a mediator cannot be called to testify in court about your case. This means that you can have a frank discussion of the issues in mediation. Our experience has been that mediation is very effective in creating lasting settlements that stand the test of time.
